No scrap gold but lots of old coins?
Ideas and inspiration for my scrap gold buyer blogs are often triggered by my customer conversations as regular readers will know well! I often have customers literally drop a bag of old british coins on my desk and ask “what are these worth please?”
Well I do explain to customers that I only buy gold and silver coins but I do feel it was worth providing some basic information on certain other rare coins to look out for, a kind of a quick reference table if you like! Keep an eye out for coins and associated dates below but always conduct further research if in doubt.
For example the following dates are worth looking up in a coin catalogue but, beware, the catalogue price ('book price') is not necessarily the price you will get, you must phone a coin dealer to get a realistic price. The letter after each date refers to the minimum condition the coin must be, to be of value.

Illustrations of each grade can be found at the front of any coin catalogue. A proof coin is made from a special blank polished to a mirror finish and presented in a box for collectors - the slightest finger mark on one of these will ruin its value as a proof coin. The grade of a coin is objective - it is not relative to its age. Thus, a coin which is grade VF (Very Fine) is of that grade irrespective of its age - there is no such grade as 'slightly worn but very good for its age'.
It can be a tad confusing but hopefully this article is a good starter for aspiring collectors or perhaps you are just thinking are granny’s old coins worth anything!
